Pleurotus ostreatus volatile aroma compounds identified from fruit-body and from mycelium grown in submerged and solid-state cultures

2003

Comparative analyses of volatile aroma compounds of the Pleurotus ostreatus JMO.95 fruit-body and its corresponding mycelium grown in liquid, on agar surface, or on solid support cultures have been carried out by dynamic headspace concentration using GC/MS and GC/sniffing. The aroma of the fruit-body was due essentially to the presence of octan-3-one and, in a lesser extent, to the presence of octan-3-ol. Other compounds, such as oct-l-en-3-ol, oct-l-en, 2-methylbutanol and a-pinene were also present in low concentrations. The comparison of the aromatic spectra of the fruit-body with the aromatic spectra of mycelia obtained under different culture conditions indicated that the main aromatic…

Bioflocculation of Euglena gracilis via direct application of fungal filaments: a rapid harvesting method

2021

Funding Information: Special thanks to the US Agricultural Research Service for the provision of fungal strains. Thanks also to Dr Marilyn Wiebe (Technical Research Centre of Finland) for her expert advice on fungi and Johanna Oja for her technical help. This research was enabled by funding from The Land and Water Technology Foundation, The Finnish Cultural Foundation, and The Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion. Publisher Copyright: © 2021, The Author(s). The high cost and environmental impact of traditional microalgal harvesting methods limit commercialization of microalgal biomass. Fungal bioflocculation of microalgae is a promising low-cost, eco-friendly method but the range of …

Medicinal Properties of Mediterranean Oyster Mushrooms: Species of Genus Pleurotus (Higher Basidiomycetes)

2017

The term “Mediterranean area,” applied in this chapter, refers to the definition reported in Med-Checklist and particularly to all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea plus Portugal, Bulgaria, the Crimea (Ukraine), and Jordan. The “Mediterranean oyster mushrooms” is a geographically and ecologically well-defined group of Basidiomycetes. The medicinal properties of some widely investigated species such as Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii are recognized worldwide, while in the case of some other Mediterranean Pleurotus taxa, there is still a lack of knowledge. A substantial increase in knowledge about the anticancer and antibacterial properties of the group of Pleurotus species growing…

The impact of Pleurotus ostreatus on organic matter transformation processes.

2012

This study showed the effect of Pleurotus ostreatus on the external organic matter (OM) transformation processes. The kinetics of these changes were determined. The experiment was conducted as 42-day pot experiment done in four combinations (with four replications). The four combinations of different substrates were: (1) organic, (2) composted hay, (3) organic soil + composted hay, (4) organic soil + composted hay + lead. The study results showed that P. ostreatus had the ability to transform external OM as well as metal–organic complexes. These transformations were reflected in the constant rate of characterized changes and correlation coefficients. The study also indicated the direction o…

Trait Variation between Two Wild Specimens of Pleurotus ostreatus and Their Progeny in the Context of Usefulness in Nematode Control

2022

Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most widespread mushrooms in the world. It is a valuable and widely cultivated edible mushroom with nematicidal properties. The mycelium of this mushroom produces a toxin that paralyzes nematodes, after which the nematode becomes infected with the filament, resulting in its death. This feature can be put to practical use as a natural nematicidal agent. In this paper, we have described studies on two wild strains of P. ostreatus (PO1, PO2) and the monokaryotic progeny obtained from their fruiting bodies. Monokaryons were crossed with each other within the progeny of one strain (PO1xPO1; PO2xPO2) and of two different strains (PO2xPO1). The growth conditions, …
